Coaster brake tradeoffs

With a coaster brake you cannot back-pedal to bring a pedal up before starting from a stop. Riders used to hand brakes often find this the biggest adjustment.

Gear counts are the easiest number on a spec sheet to read and the hardest one to interpret, because the figure that matters is not how many gears a bike has but how far apart they sit and whether the range covers the worst grade on the route you actually ride. A bike sold with seven speeds may span less useful ground than a well-chosen three, and a single speed geared for a flat waterfront can be pleasant for years. Start by describing the route honestly, then work backward to the hardware.

Measure the route, not the neighborhood

Flat is a word people apply loosely, so walk or drive the route once with the question in mind: is there any point where you would need to stand on the pedals? A short bridge approach, a parking garage ramp, a levee crossing, or the rise from a beach path up to the street counts, even if it lasts thirty seconds. Headwind counts too, and on packed sand near open water it is a permanent feature rather than an occasional one. If the answer is genuinely no, a single speed is not a compromise. If there are two or three brief rises, a three-speed covers them.

Coaster brakes and what your foot can do

A coaster brake stops the bike when you pedal backward, and its appeal is that it has almost no exposed parts, nothing to adjust, and nothing that salt spray can seize. The tradeoffs are specific rather than vague. You cannot back-pedal to reposition the pedals before starting, modulation is coarse compared with a rim or disc brake squeezed by hand, and if the chain drops you lose the brake entirely, which is the reason nearly every coaster-brake bike also carries a front hand brake. The Consumer Product Safety Commission is responsible for the federal safety requirements that govern how bicycles are built and sold in the United States, and braking is squarely within that remit.

For short, flat, low-speed riding, a coaster brake plus a front hand brake is a durable and honest combination. Two hand brakes give you finer control and are easier to use with wet hands or thick gloves, and they let you soft-pedal down a ramp without accidentally braking. What tips the decision is usually the rider's history: people who learned on coaster brakes reach for them under surprise, and people who did not will grab the levers. Match the bike to the reflex you already have rather than the one you intend to build.

Internal hubs versus derailleurs

An internally geared hub puts the mechanism inside a sealed shell, so nothing hangs into the spray, nothing bends when the bike falls over, and you can shift while stopped at a light, which matters more on short urban rides than any efficiency argument. Three-speed hubs in particular are simple, long-lived, and forgiving of neglect, needing little beyond an occasional cable adjustment and a periodic oil service. A derailleur drivetrain is cheaper for a given number of gears, gives wider range, and is repairable by any shop in the country, but it exposes a hanger, a cage, and jockey wheels to grit.

On packed sand and near salt air, that exposure is the whole argument. A derailleur that gets rinsed and lubed after sandy rides will run for years; one that does not will develop a hesitant shift, then a chain that skips under load, then a bent hanger from a parking-lot tip-over. If the maintenance is realistic for you, seven speeds buy real range for wind and the occasional bridge. If it is not, a three-speed hub keeps working through the same neglect that kills a derailleur.

What a careful reader checks

Look past the gear count to the numbers that produce it: the chainring and cog sizes on a single speed, the total range quoted for a hub, and the largest rear cog on a cassette. Check whether the shifter is a twist grip or a trigger, because grip shifters are easier on arthritic hands and harder to bump accidentally. Ask whether the rear wheel has a quick release or nuts, since coaster and hub bikes usually use nuts and a flat repair takes longer. Ask what a hub oil service costs locally, and whether the shop stocks the shifter cable.

The practical shape of the decision is that flat routes reward simplicity, and every gear you add should answer a grade, a wind, or a load you can name.
